Search is changing fast. These are the SEO shifts worth acting on — and the habits worth dropping.

Search engines now answer more questions directly on the results page, AI summaries sit above the blue links, and people search on Instagram and YouTube as much as on Google. None of this makes SEO less important. It makes lazy SEO less effective.

1. Experience beats keywords

Google increasingly rewards content that shows first-hand experience. A restaurant writing about how it sources ingredients, or an agency explaining a real project, will outperform generic articles stuffed with keywords. Write what only you can write.

2. AI overviews change the click

If a question can be answered in a sentence, expect fewer clicks. Focus on topics that need depth, comparison or a decision — the searches where people still want to read, compare and act.

3. Technical health is table stakes

  • Core Web Vitals in the green on mobile
  • Clean, crawlable site structure with a sitemap
  • Structured data for products, FAQs, reviews and local business
  • No duplicate or thin pages diluting your authority

4. Local search is a goldmine

For businesses serving a city, a complete and active Google Business Profile often drives more enquiries than the website itself. Keep hours accurate, post updates, add real photos and respond to every review.

5. Search happens everywhere

Younger audiences search on Instagram, YouTube and even Reddit. Captions, titles and descriptions on those platforms are now part of your SEO. Treat them with the same care you'd give a web page.

The best SEO strategy in 2025 is the same as ever: be the most useful result. The bar for “useful” just got higher.
